Why Choose a CanAm Defender Cargo Bed Cover?

Before diving into the installation process, let’s briefly explore why adding a cargo bed cover to your CanAm Defender is a smart choice:

  • Weather Protection: A cargo bed cover shields your cargo from rain, snow, UV rays, and dirt, keeping your gear safe and dry.

  • Security: It conceals your tools and equipment, reducing the risk of theft while you’re on the go or parked.

  • Durability: Designed to withstand tough conditions, cargo bed covers are made with heavy-duty materials like PVC-lined fabric and rigid steel frames.

  • Improved Aesthetics: Not only practical but also sleek, a cargo bed cover adds a polished look to your Defender.

With all these benefits, it’s clear why you’d want to install a cargo bed cover on your CanAm Defender. Fortunately, the process is quick and straightforward, requiring no special tools or expertise.

Step-by-Step Guide to Installing a CanAm Defender Cargo Bed Cover

Step 1: Unbox and Organize Your Components

Before you begin, ensure that you have all the parts you need. There are no tools required for installation.  Most CanAm Defender cargo bed covers come with everything pre-assembled or in a few easy-to-connect pieces. Here’s what you’ll typically find in the box:

  • Cargo bed cover (canvas material)

  • Steel frame components

  • Hardware (anchor posts and steel “J” hooks, tarp clips for securing the cover

  • Installation manual

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the components to ensure nothing is missing before you start.

Step 2: Install the Anchor Plates

  • There are (4) anchor plates, designed to fit into either the first or the last slots in the side rails (2 on each side).  The angled foot goes to the outside of the cargo bed (matches the angled side of the side rail).  The posts are what the frame will mount to and should always be located at the outer-most edge of the cargo bed.
  • Make sure the anchor plates are installed flat along the side rails
  • Secure the anchor plates by turning the ring nut in a clockwise rotation by hand until fully tightened.

Step 3: Assemble the Frame

  • Follow the instructions included in the kit or visit the website (www.sypoftx.com) to view the installation video.  The frame can be assembled on the ground and then lifted into position on the Anchor plates or it can be assembled directly onto the UTV.  A summary of the steps is as follows:
    • Side Rails – extend each end until the locator button snaps into place.  Repeat the process for each of the two side rails.
    • Front Roof Rail – extend one end of the front roof rail until the locator button snaps into place.  Install this end into one of the Side Rails until the locator button snaps into place.  Repeat this process for the other end of the front roof rail.  NOTE:  snap buttons should always be facing downward on all roof rails.
    • Center Roof Rail – extend one end of the center roof rail until the locator button snaps into place.  Install this end into one of the Side Rails until the locator button snaps into place.  Repeat this process for the other end of the Center Roof Rail.  NOTE:  snap buttons should always be facing downward on all roof rails.
    • Rear Roof Rail – extend one end of the rear roof rail until the locator button snaps into place.  Install this end into one of the Side Rails until the locator button snaps into place.  Repeat this process for the other end of the rear roof rail.
    • NOTE:  snap buttons should always be facing downward on all roof rails.
    • Side Columns – assemble the side columns to each of the side rails until the locator buttons snap into place.  NOTE:  The snap button holes at the top of each side column should face in (not to the outside), and the snap button holes at the bottom of each side column should face each other (front to back) on each side rail.
    • Side columns are to be mounted onto the posts on each of the (4) anchor plates.  Locator buttons will snap into place when installed correctly.

Step 4: Install the Cover

  • Remove the cover from the package, unroll it and locate the rear panel (with the SYP nameplate).
  • Unzip the rear panel (for easier installation)
  • Carefully lift the cover onto the top of the frame and extend the front panel to the front of the frame.
  • Begin to pull the cover down the outside of the front frame, making sure the frame corners are along the corner seams of the cover.
  • Align the rear frame with the rear corners of the cover and ensure the cover seams are located along the outer edges of the rear frame.

Step 5: Secure the cover to the UTV Cargo Bed

  • Once the cover is pulled into position on the frame and cargo bed it can be secured into place using the straps and J-hooks provided in the kit.
  • On one side of the UTV, locate the strap at the front and install the J-hook (facing in towards the cargo bed).  Insert the J-hook into the aligning slot in the side wall of the cargo bed.  Secure the strap using the double D rings on the cover.
  • Repeat this process with the straps located at the middle and rear of the side wall.
  • Repeat this entire process on the other side of the UTV side wall.

The first step in installation is to position the cover over your CanAm Defender’s cargo bed. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Lift the cover from the package and lay it across the top of your cargo bed.

  • Align the edges of the cover with the edges of your cargo bed to make sure it’s centered and straight. Ensure the cover is evenly distributed across the bed so that the attachment points match with the frame or side rails (if applicable).

  • Some covers have a front lip that should sit slightly over the cab, ensuring that the bed is fully covered.

Step 3: Attach the Frame (If Applicable)

Some CanAm Defender cargo bed covers come with a steel frame that offers extra durability and structure. If your cover includes a frame, follow these simple steps to attach it:

  • Position the frame: Align the steel frame around the edges of the cargo bed. This frame typically provides support for the cover and ensures a snug fit.

  • Attach the frame: Most frames have snap-on connectors or hook-and-loop fasteners that require no tools. Simply snap the connectors into place around the bed or attach the frame’s hooks to the designated areas.

This frame adds rigidity to the cover, making it more durable and resistant to strong winds and heavy rain.

Step 4: Secure the Cover with Straps or Fasteners

Once the cover is positioned and the frame is in place (if applicable), it’s time to secure the cover using the fastening straps or buckles included in your cargo bed cover kit.

  • Attach the straps: Most covers come with heavy-duty straps that buckle or clip into place. These straps go around the edges of the cargo bed or secure to side rails.

  • Tighten the straps: Pull the straps tight to ensure the cover fits securely around the bed. You want the cover to be tight enough that it won’t flap around during travel, but not so tight that it’s difficult to remove when needed.

If your cover uses Velcro fasteners or zippered openings, simply attach these elements along the edges of the cover to keep it securely in place.

Step 5: Install Zippers or Velcro for Easy Access

Most CanAm Defender cargo bed covers come with zippers or Velcro at the rear of the bed for easy cargo access. This allows you to quickly unload gear when needed, without having to remove the entire cover.

  • Attach Velcro: If your cover uses Velcro, simply press the Velcro strips together to seal the back of the cover. These strips provide easy access and ensure the cover stays in place during rough rides.

  • Use the Zippers: If your cover includes zippers, zip them closed once the cover is in position. Most zippers are designed to be weather-resistant, keeping rain and snow out while allowing easy access when you need it.

Step 6: Check the Fit and Adjust as Needed

Once everything is in place, step back and inspect the fit of the cover. Ensure that it’s evenly distributed across the cargo bed, and check that the straps or buckles are properly secured.

  • Check for tightness: Ensure there are no loose or sagging areas. If necessary, tighten the straps or Velcro.

  • Verify stability: Give the cover a little tug to make sure it’s firmly in place. It should stay secured even when the vehicle is moving on rough terrain.

Step 7: Final Touches

Lastly, perform a final check to make sure the CanAm Defender cargo bed cover is properly secured and ready to go. If your cover features any additional locking mechanisms or fasteners, make sure they are engaged.

  • Clean the cover: Wipe down the cover if it’s dusty or dirty from the installation process.

  • Remove any packaging: Dispose of any remaining packaging materials and keep the installation manual for future reference.

Advantages of Tool-Free Installation

One of the standout features of a CanAm Defender cargo bed cover is the tool-free installation process. Here are some of the key advantages of this design:

  • Quick setup: Without the need for tools, the entire installation process takes just a few minutes, meaning you can get back on the trail or job site quickly.
